I have a modem from my phone company (AT&T) and the network pc port burned out or stopped working. Do I have to use their equipment? Cant I buy my own modem and router to connect my computers? The "new" equipment sent to me isnt working either so, I just dont want to use their stuff. Any info would be helpful.

You should be able to use your own modem. Just make sure you get the correct modem for your service. Dialup service = dial up modem (usually the one inside your computer), DSL service = DSL modem, and Cable service = Cable modem. If you aren't sure, ask the service person in the store to assist you.
