.As a black person i fell that we must teach our children the sevenpence of this ugly word, that means the history and how it was used to demoralize us and how some of us died to eradicate this word in association with our Race. It also has to do with self hater. we must at all cost educate to never except this in our ever day conversation. I can't say the word either but my parents instill the important of it. we come from the greatest civilizations. Lets wrap ourselves in it we mustn't forget those that died for the right to definite ourselves. Great subject thanks for asking.

i just had this conversation with a friend yesterday, neither she nor I allow our children (sons) to use this term. and we were discussing how it is used as an endearing term. I think it is because so many people do not tech their children the meaning behind the word, the ugly history of the word. Why the world was used and how degrading the word is. it is very sad and in my opinion shows a lack of responsibility. Another one that comes to mind and really makes my blood boil, the word colored! What is with this. i moved from a major city (urban area) eight years ago to a rural area, and many people use this term to describe black folks and I also hear black folks use this term. It really upsets me and I find it very degrading. We are all of some color, some are transparent with their racist ideas and views but the term colored to describe a person in my opinion is a very negative and dated term that also need not be used. It always makes me think they really want to say the "n" word but are much more comfortable using the word colored and feel comfortable and confident with this. We as parents need to ensure our children know the history and ugliness that this word stand for and not allow our children to feel it is an endearing term. Education is he key to this. As one gains knowledge and education one becomes aware of just how loaded with HATE this word is unacceptable to use. modern culture have made acceptable a vast amount of words which are degrading and not acceptable such as using terms such a hoe and ***** to describe women or females, We as parents must take a stand. God bless

I know some black people who never use that word, and I know of some TV/movies that use that word within context (not degrading but portraying a time when it was common) and I know some comediens that use that word in speech. The latter I tihnk does it to try to take away from the degrading nature of the word. Sort of like a big person will call themselves and others "fat" to take away the degrading nature of it. IMO no matter how many times it is said out of the context of a racial slur, it is still degrading.

I don't know, it's ridiculous. But I guess there's a certain hypocracy to it. I mean, they're calling each other a derogatory word. What can you really do about that? I'm Chinese, and I constantly make fun of how my people can't drive because we see in widescreen. Is it necessarily racist? Maybe. Is it hateful? Again, maybe, but how can I hate my own kind? I'm just accepting who I am. It's just one of those cultural paradoxes.

Most don't, it seems to me that it's only the 'gangsters' that call each other that. They probably know the history of it, so I'm not sure why they do it. I guess it takes away the derogatory power of the word if they use it themselves, although it is very overused.

I don't know. And sadly, I have been guilty of using it. I guess, it started as a means of defense. If you've never been picked on when you were a kid, you know that ignoring the teasing doesn't always work. However, when you begin to laugh at yourself, it kinda confuses your bully. I've always believed that was how it started. As a form of black pride, like the word *****. We were no longer colored, we were black. And to take it up a notch, let's switch languages and call ourselves ******. It was a bit of a joke. As if to say, "Now what, I don't care if you call me that. In fact, I rather like it."

I agree with you totally and do not use the term. Apparently, those that do have forgotten the history of that word, or don't care.

I really don't know why but I can say this. If you don't want people of other races to refer to you in this manner then you should not use the term
