I think you must mean the Poppy. The poppy grew in the fields of Flanders where so many men died during the First World War and it has always been worn for rememberance - rememberance of all those who fell during that war; later, those who fell in the Second World War and subsequent conflicts have been included in that rememberance. There will also be a promenade concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London tonight (11th), at the end of which thousands of poppies will be released from high in the building, fluttering down on those below. Wreath laying ceremonies at cenotaphs and war memorials take place all over the UK (as well as other countries) on Rememberance Day: 11th November, and a minute's silence is also observed at 11.11am. (The First World War ended at 11.11am on the 11th November - the 11th month of the year). If you want to learn more about exactly why the Poppy was chosen, visit the website below.

As has been said before - But it was the 1st World War that ended on 11-11-18, and was to commemorate those who died in that conflict. The first taking place in 1919.
It has - as other wars had occurred - come to encompass those conflicts too.
It was know as 'Armistice Day' until the 2nd WW. and Remembrance day afterwards.
On the nearest Sunday wreaths are ceremoniously laid at The 'Cenotaph' in London, and a two minute silence held at 11am.
A silence is usually held on the 11th November too.
Red Poppies, made of paper, are made for the charity 'The British Legion' which is there to help ex-servicemen and women. It is these that you saw being worn.

In Canada, the Royal Canadian Legion sells poppies to raise money for funds that are used to look after veterans, fund scholarships for students, and maintain projects that are related to remembering fallen soldiers.
This is not a tradition that is done in the United States. Canadians who wear a poppy in the U.S. are constantly asked what the significance of the poppy flower is. Having always known the poppy tradition, I found that interesting.
A very famous poem that will be read at several remembrance ceremonies today will be "In Flanders Fields". The opening of the poem is "In Flanders Fields, the poppies grow. Between the crosses, row on row." At ceremonies that I have attended, kids are usually asked to read this piece.
The poppies symbolize the blood spilled and the amunition (bullets) spent on the many service men and women who died trying to protect their beliefs and the freedoms of generations to come. If you go to any military cemetary around the world that has war dead from WWI or WWII, the wreaths will be fully decorated with poppy flowers.
Just to add one last thing, it is considered proper protocol to remove the poppy after the service and to tuck it among the many floral tributes at the cenotaph.
Hope that this has answered your question and more.

That "red flower" is a poppy. It signifies the dead who lay in fields of poppies during World War 1. It also includes the fallen from any war since. Considering the amount of soldiers who are dying daily around the world TODAY, I thought you might be aware of the word RESPECT!
