There's been a lot of research into hypnosis, and what's been found so far is that it depends greatly upon susceptibility. Hypnosis doesn't cause people to do things they wouldn't normally do. Basically, hypnosis just makes people more apt to suggestions. It often depends on the language of the hypnotherapy; a statement like "your hand is tired" has a greater effect than "is your hand tired?".
A person who is very imaginative and has magical sorts of thinking is much more likely to accept hypnosis and be affected greater by it. Basically, if you believe in hypnosis, you're more likely to experience a greater "level" of it.
