My latest method is to remember where I'm going, not be petty, always be calm, don't stoop to their level...but at the same time, don't let them get away with it. Always come back with something. They can stab me in the back, but I can stab them in the front. Politely. Could be I remind them of something that needs their attention, for instance.

That sounded petty. But you know what I mean. In the end, it will not amount to much and their victories will taste like sand in their mouths. Let's hope.
On the other hand, I don't have to deal with much backstabbing anymore.

ignore them
don't let them have any knowledge about you in future
make sure your having a right laugh especially when they are passing by.
revenge is sweet they will slip up people like that generally do.
let them think you are so untethered by there actions because you are so much better than they are.
and if you do get into conversation with this person ask them lots of questions about whatever they are saying ties em in knots and is funny.
