No, don't call a plumber. It'd be $150 for a 5 minute job.
Shower knobs are splined (to control the valve) and they are held in place by a screw. The screw (usually a Phillips head) is under the plastic cover that says H or C.
Get a slotted screwdriver and a phillips screwdriver. Pop the cover off the end of the knob. Take the knob off, check the splines and clean them out. If they're good and the valve stud splines are ok, slide the knob back onto the stud aligning the splines. Check the screw and make sure the threads are good (not stripped). If it's ok, screw it back in tight. Snap the plastic cap back on.
If the splines are gone on the knob, go to the hardware store and buy a new knob set. If the splines are gone on the valve stud comng out of the wall, NOW call a plumber.

Take the knob off and take it with you to the DIY store so you can match up a replacement. There is sometimes a plastic cap in the middle of the knob. Try to pry under it with a small screwdriver or the tip of a utility knife. When it comes off you Will see the screw to remove it with. Meanwhile, clamp a small pair of channel locks on the screw to act as a temporary knob until you can replace it, so you can use your shower. Good luck

If it's a twisty turny type look for the small allen wrench type of screw under the knob, it's probably come loose, your going to strip the threads on the stem and ruin it with a wrench.
Go to the nearest ACE hardware and ask them, they'll give you a one, two, three on "How to" good luck.

Mine too. Mine is cracked on the inside so it is not grabbing the stem like it should. It works on kind of cam and follower arrangement. I super glued mine held for a while but broke again.
Check your knob if it is cracked you can replace it yourself. If the stem is broken or worn out, I would call a plumber.
