The boys have the long pretty fins and the girls do not. Word of caution, from experience... don't put the two together, he will kill her.

The females are much more drab, most having a white or cream colored body. The males are brilliantly colored and have long flowing fins.
Despite what everyone says about putting males and females together, I have successfully kept a pair alive for several years in a fish tank with other fish. But, my tank was very large and had lots of territorial divisions (like rocks, plants, etc...) to keep everyone happy.
