Historically you will not have to worry until the 30's, as history is only really understood about thirty years or more after it happened.

our ancestors referred to periods by the monarch who was sitting on the throne at the time. The French started to refer to history without Monarchs, even changed the calendar to a ten day week, but then Napoleon decided his ego need a title, like Emperor, and it was not until the Russian Revolution, of 1917, that time was described without some king or queen (or President) being quoted.

the habit of referring to a decade is a fashion thing, and did not happen till after the first world war. Perhaps because there was a second Roosevelt in the White house, and they needed a different way to describe his era. Ask again in 25 years time?

This decade is called the noughties. Next will be the 10s... funnily enough.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any standard fun-to-say, rolls-off-the-tongue way. I've heard some call this decade "the 2k's". The most common way I've heard is probably "The Early 2000's", and then what will be "the 2010's", pronounced "Twenty Tens".

this is not my idea but I have heard...
2000 -2009 the naughties from nought meaning zero
2010 -2019 I haven't heard any suggestions but teens sounds logical if twenties follow
