Zeggy has the answer. British Empire was the first reason for so many countries driving on the left and the fact that British engineers created most of the rest of the transport networks.

That left USA and France who do everything different to the Brits and unfortunately Europe followed France at a critical time.

I just had a look at that list, and it's amazing how many countries are right hand drives/drive on the left, I had no idea it was that many.

The UK and most of it's former coloniess. I think Canada is the only ex colonie that drives on the right as apposed to India and so on.
