It depends on the size of the plot you have. My mother has an area put aside, which is about 24ft x 18ft. She grows lettuce, Tomatoes, Cabbage, Runner Beans, Peas, Broccoli, Carrots, Red Onions, Sprouts, Courgette and Garlic. She also grows Gooseberries, Blackberries and Rhubarb. This area supports their needs and also family and friends, does this give you an idea?
She has a potting shed, but no Greenhouse. She just uses polythene sheet and small stakes when required. Nothing expensive. She also gets a lot of seeds off the front of magazines that she buys. These give you growing tips for the season and also tell you when to "start off" certain seeds to get the most growing time. It's a good way of getting into it as all the information is simple and timely.
Good Luck.

Most veg is good to grow. For example, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, turnip. You could also try, pears, crab apples, plums. The only trouble with the fruit is the trees take a year or two to root so it would have to be a long term plan. Berry's are quite easy to grow and make wicked pies. If you were doing it for a business you could sell the pies, or even charge people to pick them. All you would need are a few plastic bowls tell them a Price say £1.50 per bowl they fill and send them on there way.
