It means that all or most of your money was taken. You can be "taken to the cleaners" by a scam artist or you can go to court and be "taken to the cleaners" in a lawsuit or divorce.

basically it means that you have been scammed out of a large some of money.
And yes I believe lawyers are scammers just in a legal sort of way..... IMHO
