It sounds as though you have a bad tempered boss! As for the 4 minutes, it depends on the terms in your Contract of Employment. Most employers state that the employee must be ready to start work at the agreed start time (ready - not just arriving!). I once had a contract that 'allowed' me 3 minutes lateness per week, more than that and wages were docked. He could have kept cool and merely commented on your lateness and asked for an explanation. You don't say if he owns the business, or is just an employee himself. If he's the owner, then he is the boss and perhaps he has a lot of problems just now (no excuse I know; if he's an employee himself, then he was out of order and you could complain about his management skills (or lack of them!).

How often are you 4 minutes late? Those minutes add up! You should always be on time for work. Think about the fireman or the paramedic, if he slopes in late 4 minutes? Those 4 minutes could have saved someone's life. I know it sounds over the top. But i'm a teacher, i would sent a good example to the youth of today by being 4 minutes late to every lesson, what message am i sending?

Are you in a union? If so make a formal complaint through you rep, will help you if you have a witness. No matter if he is your boss he is totally out of order and wants taking down a peg. Some of these bosses forget that they can be replaced just the same as the workforce. On no account back down or say sorry to him or he will walk all over you.You have got rights and this person will have to be educated of that.Once again another example of bad management, how do they get these jobs?Us and Them scenario again.Come the Revolution.

under normal circumstances you would find that most bosses have a certain air of respect and understanding for their staff, however, being late i suppose is something which he could discipline you for, depending on individual circumstaces etc, although no body has the right to be abusive and disrespectful especially if there are other people around. If your in a union and u feel grieved, or a deputy in work, discuss this with them, explain and show remorse for perhaps not being punctual, but really discuss how this made you feel. It is unethical to think that just because someone in power uses this as a form of verbal abuse that it is acceptable......hope you feel better x

Everyone has the right to be treated with basic human decency; however, they are only going to treat you as well as you demand to be treated. Simply because you are the employee does not give your boss to talk to you in such an ill mannered fashion. If this was done in public that's even worse. I would first go to your boss and explain (calmly) that you did not appreciate that type of treatment. Explain that as an adult you give a certain type of treatment and expect to receive the same consideration in return. If it happens again I would seek out human resources to file a complaint. However all that being said, you may want to make sure that if you do go to HR you do so with a clean record.

well i guess i would have to say yes but he should have never shouted (your not a child). I guess i would suggest trying to get to work 10 mins before start time then he has no come back. If you have made a habit of being late then maybe he would have had just cause but this sounds like a one off and i certainly wouldnt have reacted in this way. maybe he's just having a crap day, give him the benefit of the doubt and show him you are a great member of staff. good luck xx

I could see if you were late consistantly late and more than 10 minutes late, and it would depend on what kind of job you did. Most places give you 7 minutes. If you are consistantly late, that would show disrespect and he wouldn't like the disrespect. Try leaving 5 minutes earlier to your job. Maybe your boss is haveing a bad personal day. Try not to take it personally. Ask him why he was so angry over 4 minutes. Apologize to him that it made him so angry and maybe he will open up.

No boss has the right to raise his voice at an employee.Any infringement on rules should be dealt with in a professional manner and disciplinary procedures should always be followed,ie verbal warning, written warning etc.Any aggressive behaviour from bosses to employees breaches labour laws and the company could be sued for harassment.Dont stand for it!

not sure about that. think you have a 5 min leaver. but sounds like he got out the wrong side of the bed. or his misses refused him marital rights. either way I'd avoid him. but when he realises he done wrong he should apologise. if not make sure you let him know you are not happy that he shouted at you. I would make a point of going and apologise to him for being late . and tell him you didn't do it earlier coz you sensed he was in a mood this morning. that will put him in his place. and make you look like a mature and conscious person.

rite is not "right." While he is your boss he can do anything he likes. If he sacks you or you walk away then you can check you rights. However if it is a one off, just turnover the other cheek. Also consider whether your timekeeping is a regular problem that would upset any boss.
This may be his way of giving a verbal warning. Just too loudly. Not all bosses are perfect.
