A movie that shows how living on a 19th century British man o' war at sea for an indefinite time is Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World. It is wonderful in every way.
And The Perfect Storm is also good, for a more modern take...

I would have to say right off the top of my head that Titanic would be my fave movie that is based mainly on the ocean/sea. I am talking about the one starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

I know this film was slammed but I loved "Waterworld"; truly filmed on the ocean.
Only the last scene was on land.
The making of it was a nightmare (a hurricane hit), it ran so over-budget (at the time it held the distinction of being the most expensive film ever made), Kevin Costner got dreadful press during the filming (cheating on his wife which eventually lead to his d i v o r c e ) and the critics mauled it!
But I totally enjoy it every time I watch it.
The floating city was a marvel in design and Dennis Hopper was a hoot.
The catamaran type thing that Costner used was on display in Disney World, Florida.
Great really considering it was blown up and sunk in the movie!
If you haven't seen it, I recommend it.

One of my best movies are Titanic, Perfect Storm, Ghost Ship & Poseidon.
Titanic - nice story without a very good ending
Perfect Storm - Nice story which is very emotional
Poseidon - Survival as it always is.
Ghost Ship - Nice horror movie as it involves sea adventures

The Old Man and the Sea. Spencer Tracy starred as an old fisherman who caught a sailfish and it chronicled his dangers trying to get it back to shore. It was excellent!!

Perfect Storm is pretty awesome. Purely because it's based on a true story, and hasn't been given a 'happy after all' Hollywood ending.
