I tell what really winds me up, and that's when people say "i'm a civil servant".

I used to work in retail and had to complete finance forms which needed customer information including occupation.

I had an endless number of heated conversations with arrogant people who wouldn't tell me what their actual occupation was and insisted they were a civil servant when the finance company wouldn't accept this.
There was a separate box to say if they were or not, why is it such a big deal to them?

They would be instantly turned down with this information but argued and argued when this happened.

Maybe Civil Servant sounds a lot better than office clerk which is what they actually do.

Firstly not all public sector jobs are well paid, many private jobs pay far more. Secondly, if your so envious of people in the public sector then you should have got a job in the public sector. And last but by no means least, when people took their public sector job they knew they wouldn't be getting big fat pay rises, many of would never earn a fortune and that a certain percentage of their wages would be paid towards a pension, but the benefit was they would retire earlier with a half decent pension. For the government to now change the goalposts on existing workers is just not on. If they want to bring it in for people joining the public sector in the future then fair enough as it is then those peoples choice of whether to join the public sector or not. I'm not a public sector worker, but I think they have a good reason to be up in arms over the governments proposals.

Of course they do! AS people have already said, it's just a job like everyone else. That is the problem with society today, we have forgotten the value of respect for others. Indeed, we live in a plastic, money orientated world where status counts above human interaction. I really don't know why you are posing this question ..... I suspect that a public sector worker has upset you? Hey. they are just people who choose to work in certain areas, probably for no other reason than to pay the rent in the main. Listen, you only get an ordered society by respecting basic rules ..... we all deserve respect unless we clearly show otherwise. I am a public sector worker and show everyone the greatest respect and consideration .... and you know what? I get it back!

Everybody deserves respect -- at least until they do something that causes them to be less than worthy of respect.

I used to be in the Navy, so I used to work for the government. I like to think that I deserved respect at the time.

No ,in the main they are Lazy ,Shiftless , full of "Self Importance" , Buck Passing , Bullshit , and Tragically Obsessed with being "Politically Correct" Jobsworths . The ones who really do Give their all and real Value for Money are not at all Popular and are usually the Victims of the "Public Sector Mafia"

Only the ones who do a good job and are nice. Most I have encountered are public sector because they are too lazy to be idlers! Well, some too stupid to know how to fill out the forms to get it.
Correction: And, I am not referring to firefighters and police, nor teachers. More the clerk types that do not hazardous jobs!

Like the police ? Firemen ? Nurses & doctors ? Social workers ?
Sorry, but this is a silly question. Apart from the obvious candidates above, what about all the other public sector workers who do their best to provide all the back up & services you obviously do not appreciate whilst being underpaid & over worked ? And remember this: they continue to do their job, whoever the current political masters are.

Managing to get through the day without smacking a patient or a relative - i deserve a bloody medal!!!

Because I work in admin, we don't get any recognition from Nurses or Doctor who think they are GODS.

They are so rude.

No they must earn respect.
No body deserves respect, teachers usually make this mistake which is why they get treated with contempt and derision.
