Our bathroom has recently been retiled but we are still having trouble with the mould on the ceiling. We have cleaned it off, and painted over it, but it seems to have come back. I dont want to have to do this every 2 weeks, has anyone any ideas as to how to stop the mould after i paint the ceiling?? I have been told PVA glue perhaps?!

most DIY stores do a mould spray, it costs around £5 for a pump action bottle of the stuff but it works a treat - just spray it on and leave it, the ceiling will be clean in about half an hour.. no hard work involved.. just a strong smell so leave the windows open

The mold killer paints won't work until you take care of the condensation and a de-humidifier won't keep up with the shower.

You definitely need an exhaust / extractor fan. Under most codes for the duration of my professional practice (33 years), a fan or a window has been required by code in all restrooms. I have never seen a code anywhere that did not have this requirement.

So, it means:
1. You're not using the window or fan. Open the window or start the fan when the water starts. Keep the window open or let the fan go for another 15-20 minutes afterward.
2. It's an illegal "bootleg" bathroom. You need to install the fan with a minimum rating of 450 cfm (cubic feet per minute).

You really need to get rid of the source of the mould first. Maybe you need a ventilation an fitted in the bathroom - condensation from a shower/bath can cause constant mould to appear. To cover the existing mould you can buy special paint with additives in it to treat and cover the mould - look in the hardware stores for it xx

CURE Kill the spores with bleach applied with an old spray dispenser, and wipe off. Keep the door permanently open when not in use, the fresh air interchange will not encourage re-growth of the spores. If that fails, install an extractor, or open a window.

most big hardware stores sell paint that has something (i don't know what) in it which stops mould growing. it is made especially for bathrooms. you would have to clean the mould you already have before you paint the ceiling.

Th steam and condensation is causing your problem, you must either open a window everytime someone uses the shower or bath or get an extracto fan that switches on when the shower is turned on, there is also special paint in b and q for bathrooms and kitchens or any suface exposed to steam.

Go to your local pet shop and buy an inexpensive ultra violet light (used for reptiles). Plug it in and let it shine at night while you sleep, it will kill and molds it shines on. you just have to continue to do this untill you properly treat the mold at it's source.

We had the same problem at I know how you feel. It is a real chore. How about using a de-humidifier in your bathroom. We tried it and opened all the windows etc and it helped quite a bit.

Best of luck.
