I haven't travelled all of India - only the South, but I would recommend the hill stations such as as Ooty (where snooker originated!) or Kodaikanal as they're a little cooler and very green and pretty. Kerala is beautiful too as is Bangalore, but I would avoid Madras (Chennai) if you're in the south. Pondicherry is lovely and has a great Ashram to visit - and if you like leather, Hidesign stuff is made there and is about a 10th of the price of the UK. But if you want to get stoned and have very little interaction with Indian people, go to Goa and hang out with the Dutch and Germans.

If you looking for a tour it is best to visit Kerala, where has good climate. For seeing historical places visit Delhi and for watching poverty and uncivilised group visit Bihar.
