In addition to the other comments here, I can provide a good example of one of aloe vera's lesser known benefits. Aloe vera can be very helpful for healing along the digestive tract.

Years age when I worked on a surgical ward, I took care of a sweet little lady in her 70s. She had had a portion of her bowel removed due to cancer. She was extremely obese and developed a fistula from her bowel to the surface of her abdomen (a common problem with obese people having surgery).

The doctors had been trying for weeks to heal the fistula. She could handle oral fluids, but they just couldn't get her to solids. Every time they tried, the fistula opened back up.

Finally, I brought her in a gallon of aloe vera juice and encouraged her to drink a cup every day. Within a week the fistula had healed and never reopened. When I saw her a year later, she was still drinking the aloe vera juice faithfully every day.

Another quick example: My grandmother had bleeding diverticula so bad she was anemic from the bleeding. I got her drinking aloe vera juice and the problem was significantly improved.

Aloe Vera is another one of Mother Natures natural medicines...why? Because it's rich in vitamins & minerals giving you energy if you drink it...if you use the gel from the plant on your skin it is a good antibiotic healing sores, burns and much more....for more info try logging into www.aloe-vera.org or any of the other Aloe Vera websites.

It's an incredibly good natural solution for skin irritation. In warmer climes such as the carribean it grows wild - and you can break a piece off (it's a bit like a non-spiky cactus) and the milk inside will instantly calm down sunburn. It is used in alot of cosmetic preparations - and if you go to holland and barret, they also sell aloe vera juice, for sorting out digestive problems - but it tastes gross!

This is what wikipedia said, we use it as recommended by our vet for our dogs itchy skin and it works!!!!

A. vera is commonly used externally to treat various skin conditions such as cuts, burns and eczema. It is alleged that sap from Aloe vera eases pain and reduces inflammation. Scientific evidence on the effects of Aloe vera sap on wound healing is contradictory (Vogler and Ernst, 1999). A study performed in the 1990s showed that the healing of a moderate to severe burn was sped up by six days when covering the wound on a regular basis with aloe vera gel, compared to the healing of the wound covered in a gauze bandage (Farrar, 2005). In contrast, another study suggested wounds to which Aloe vera gel was applied were significantly slower to heal (Schmidt and Greenspoon, 1991).

Many of Aloe vera's beneficial properties are attributed to mucopolysaccharides present in the inner gel of the leaf, especially acemannan (acetylated mannans). An injectable form of acemannan manufactured and marketed by Carrington Laboratories as Acemannan Immunostimulant™ has been approved in the USA for treatment of fibrosarcoma (a type of cancer) in dogs and cats after clinical trials. It has not been approved for use by humans, and although it is not a drug its sale is controlled and it can only be obtained through a veterinary doctor.

Many cosmetic companies add sap or other derivatives from Aloe vera to products such as makeup, moisturisers, soaps, sunscreens, shampoos and lotions. Aloe gel is alleged to be useful for dry skin conditions, especially eczema around the eyes and sensitive facial skin. In addition, it has been used for treating fungal infections such as ringworm.

An article published in the British Journal of General Practice suggests that A. vera is particularly good at treating long suffers of athlete's foot. The topical application of A. vera is not an effective preventative for radiation-induced injuries. Whether or not it promotes wound healing is unclear, and even though there are some promising results, clinical effectiveness of oral or topical A. vera remains unclear at present.

I bought some Aloe Vera cream for my feet, it's fantastic - I had really bad heels and they're so much better now. I understand it's got really good healing properties, don't know how or why....
