Its out of respect for the vessel which has to be treated with respect. Old sailors many moons ago called their ships a "Lady" because they missed their loved ones back home during long voyages. That's why the "Figure Head" on older vessels were always a "Lady" which was placed there because it was considered "She" would protect the ship and crew from harm at sea.

Friendship and her Ladyship these have nothing
to do with ships in England. We seem to have stuck
the word ship on the end of lots of word.
Hardship,Lordship,sponsorship,fellowship,dealership just to
name a few.
I don`t know if this is what you were getting at ?but this

You mean why are ships given female names? They are vessels, as a woman is a vessel for new life.
