Roosevelt through the joint chief's of staff order him off so he would not get captured by the Japanese and be used as a propaganda tool for the Japanese.

P.S. Ike was the head of Allied forces in Europe, not the Pacific.

Is ego ordered him to leave. It was cowardly for him to do so and leaving those troops behind, it was like he stabbed them in the back. He was that great of a general.
