chooses a friend of the opposite sex that you do not approve of do you as a parent enter into conflict with them or do you discuss the issue in an open and friendly manner

You invite your teenagers friend to your house as often as possible and try to be a positive influence on the friend. By having them to your house, you can tell if you really should disapprove of the friend or not. If you say something negative about the friend, you will labeled as the old person who just doesn't know how things are today. By having the friend to your house and being kind towards the friend, you will look like the good guy in the eyes of your teenager and, if the friendship lasts more than a few weeks, you will be in a much stronger position to question certain aspects of the friend that you disapprove of.

Discuss the issue in an open and friendly manner if you must.

If you don't approve of them make sure it's for the right reasons.

Have you even met their new friend?

If not, I suggest you do get to know them. They might not be as bad as you thought! Trust your kids decisions man!

But yes. Do be friendly. Conflict doesn't get anyone anywhere. Your kid DEFINITELY won't listen to you if you just go off at them straight away without discussing it first.

For sure, discuss in an open and friendly manner. Let them know where you stand but they have the final choice. If you are right it will come out eventually and take care of it self and you and your teenager will still be on speaking terms. It's better than having them sneak around you to see one another.

Hi i wish you provided more detail, like age and other friends, do his o her other friends like this person or is your teen ignoring other friends to be with this one.wow so many unanswered questions so hard to properly answer, my sons are now grown but i never told them how to dress or do their hair stuff like that but when it comes to friends and you have a concern that this person is affecting your child in a negative way just be honest with your teen and ask --do i have a concern-- and kinda double check about where they go if innocent or not so innocent then just watch, sometimes what looks like a scary friend is the most open hearted caring person.. something else i have done is had one of my sons friends (that kinda scared me ) over to dinner or to an outing we had just so i to could spend time with him to get a feel of what this person was about ..hope i helped a little Bye Deb

You have to discuss, yelling and arguing works agains the parent. Call in aunts, uncles, neighbors, grandparents, anyone who the teen MIGHT listen to and have them help you explain what is so bad about the new friend. My folks had to do that with me before I could see one of my "cool" friends was trouble. A week after I decided to spend less time with him, he got arrested for stealing candy at a store. I might have been with him.......
