In the USA you are employed at will. In the UK you have rights against the employer after a year of employment. As you didn't use either $ or pound sign we don't know where you are.

If you were underpaid, you should contact the authorities and complain, and let them recover your unpaid salary.

Layoff? You mean redundant? Or through lack of work the boss tells you to go home? In labouring I know that happens a lot. Wether its legal or not is another matter.

Would you fight that for just 18.50 a day? I would get another job.

You need to show proof that you were either fired because of your religion, age, gender or a retaliation for something lawful that you have done. If not it's at will and the company doesn't have to explain itself for letting you go.
