If it's an outdoor plant, scales are often farmed and protected by ants. So, work to get rid of the ants, or prevent them from climbing up on the plant. Natural ways to do this are with diatomaceous earth around the bottom of the plants, or by putting sticky stuff on your plants' stems.

Once you've done this, everything that likes to eat scales may take care of the problem for you.

Scales are attracted to lush foliage, so don't fertilize during the treatment period and keep watering to a minimum. If an infestation occurs during summer, place the plants outside and let their natural predators, including lady beetles and parasitic wasps (Microterys flavus and Metaphycus luteolus), help you control the problem. Before bringing your plant back inside, inspect it carefully. As an added precaution, you can spray it with a light all-season or summer horticultural oil to smother any remaining scale insects.

Scale is easily killed by spraying your plant with white oil (available at nursery centres). It's harmless to humans but suffocates the scales (they breath through their scales), they die and fall off. You can make it yourself if you want to, check on the Internet for a recipe.
