Sounds like your apricot tree has been attacked by the PEACHTREE BORER or the SHOTHOLE BORER. Here are some suggestions to control both....

The PEACHTREE BORER is a moth that lays many eggs. The larval stage is what does the damage and they can damage the tree in two ways: girdling and inducing plant pathogens to invade the weakened tree.

Using a pheremone trap called; "Scentry Wing Trap", has been shown to catch the male moths. Fertilize and water your tree regularly. It's been proven that healthier trees are able to sustain attacks from the peachtree borer better than those that are weak.

Placing a residual insecticide around the base of the tree trunk will deter attacks from larvae. You can bury mothballs in the soil around the base of the trunk... it works by killing the larvae and preventing the adult females from laying their eggs in the soil near the trunk.

SHOTHOLE BORERS are small black/brown beetles. The larvae of these beetles are what does the damage to apricot trees. Since its advisable not to treat with chemicals, the natural way to prevent infestation of this pest is by maintaining a healthy tree. Healthy trees exude a resin which kill the grubs as they bore holes into them. So the best thing to do is to fertilize and water the tree on a regular basis.

Hope you'll find this information useful and it will help save your apricot tree from futher infestation. GOOD LUCK!
