80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

What do I live for?

I believe my life is not mine alone. It also belongs to all my friends and families. I live my life because of them.

I did not exist in this world with the realization that "we live only to die".

I--we live because we have a purpose. I have a purpose. Whatever our individual purposes in life are, I know these have something to do in either making this world a better place (cliched I guess), helping others and making their lives worth living, or simply just to make an impact.

I also believe that I shouldn't seek for the meaning and purpose of my life. It will come to me at a time I least expect it. I just have to be alive in the course of my life.

Come to think of it, isn't that a "meaning" itself?

By the way, I kinda like efw's answer.
There are so many things In the cosmos we can't explain because our first notion is that these things are abstract ideas and can't be explained rationally.

Take for example love. Why can't we explain it? Is it because it is not meant to be explained but to be felt? Is love an irrational concept then? No. I don't think so. WHat makes love abstruse is not the fact that it has no meaning but rather it has lots of meanings. Same goes with life. What makes life abstruse is the fact that it has an infinite number of meanings.

So guys, if a girl asks you why you love her, it's actually okay to answer with particular explanations like "because you love the way she comforts you"..etc.. Answering with "I can't explain, I just love you" makes the girl think you really love her but if you answer with specific details, she'll just think you love her just for that. Actually, any answer will do as long as those are sincere.
