Personally, I would not most often put on a poppy to commemorate veterans. Ask your self those questions: one million. Where do poppies come from? two. Why can we put on poppies? three. What do the poppies constitute? The culture of the poppy comes from the Battle of the Somme in the course of WWI. According to the mass media, we put on poppies and browse "In Flanders Fields" to honour veterans who fought for our freedom. However simply appear at the usage of those symbols on the time. The poppy used to be used as a recruiting gadget; "Take up our quarrel with the foe", eh! I might mission the statement that Canadians fought in WWI for Canadian freedom. Anyone with a top institution schooling can rattle off the factors of the First World War - European imperialism, colonial pursuits, defence pacts. Probably some of the key factors used to be militarism - WWI used to be triggered in aspect by means of an hands race led by means of Britain (adding Canada!) to keep whole mastery of of the seas. The First World War and the poppy weren't approximately "freedom". They had been approximately carrier to "The Empire" - the growth and lust for wealth and energy of European empires used to be what WWI used to be approximately. These nations had been simply spoiling for a combat. War used to be no longer frowned upon however celebrated! People had a good time within the streets once they heard that Britain had declared warfare on Germany. They cheered approximately how they had been going to "supply the bully of Europe a well trouncing". While I is also the most important fan of the British Empire and I continuously like to cheer approximately our victories, I nonetheless do not consider I might put on the poppy to honour Canadian veterans protecting freedom. When it involves "who began it?", the Allies are simply as responsible because the Central Powers. I do not consider the poppy is a foul image in any respect, I with no trouble consider it represents whatever else.
