it is FICTION BASED ON CONTROVERSY. the theory that Mary Magdalene married Jesus and bore his children is not new in the least. there is reference to it in DOGMA (no one had a fit then). the worship of Mary Magdalene is not new either. if you look up gnostic texts i'm sure you can find tons of information. what pissed off the catholic church was the fact that the best selling book was made into a blockbuster film. the book was on the best seller's list for a really long time, but chances are if you read the book then there is a label that clearly states that it is a work of fiction. movies, however, are mesmerizing and the general public may mistake it for a real-life story. because there are always high speed chases and complex puzzle solving trying to be foiled by albino monks in real life. in short, people are stupid and the fact that the catholic church made an outcry about this movie and people went so far as to physically protest it's showing ONLY SOLD MORE TICKETS... all publicity is good publicity. if you were interested in this sort of story, i suggest you read 'another roadside attraction' by tom robbins. it runs along the same line.
addition after i read other answers:
let's try to be real about this. dan brown did not make up the thoery about jesus and mary magdelene. he simply used references from previous theory. all he did is put an exciting story around the theory. i do not believe that he set out to manipulate minds or exploit ideas for the purpose of anything other than the entertainment of his readers... he's a novelist, that's his job.

Whether or not the book was fact or fiction, and let's face it, we will never know, is irrelevant. The main point of this book is not that jesus was just a man, who married and had children, but how religion has condemned women throughout time. Ever since the story of eve, women have been cast in the role of evil and untrustworthy temptresses. Christianity persecutes women over and over again, and the book uses many historical facts to show this, such as the witch hunts etc. He shows us how our world has been dominated by men throughout time, and governed under masculine principles and has completely neglected feminine concepts such as caring for our mother earth.
The book talks about this inbalance, and our puritannical views which condemn sexuality and what was once considered natural before christianity came about. So you can see the book did not show christianity/catholism in a very positive light and that is why there was so much controversy.

All sorts of reasons,
1. People love conspiracies (Kennedy assassination, Moon landings, etc) and Dan Brown cleverly latched into this. The Da Vinci Code is the latest in a long line of books that tap into this (von Daniken's "Chariots of the Gods" and Charles Berlitz's "Bermuda Triangle" are also good examples).
2. The Roman Catholic Church unwittingly stirred things even further by condemning the content.
3. People also like to visit places where events (either real or fictional) have taken place. There is a thriving tourist industry in the UK built around visiting the sites where films or TV programmes have been filmed. Dan Brown exploits this by using popular and well-known landmarks in the plot of his book.
4. and, of course, once the media machine had rolled into gear it became self-perpetuating. The media would ask the rhetorical question "Is there any truth.........etc" and historians, building owners, the church and so on would feel obliged (or be pleased to speak for a fee!) to issue a rebuttal.
It is pure fiction, but I still enjoyed it and I would not under-estimate Dan Brown's cleverness in exploiting the above.

Because Brown is telling us that 21 centuries of beliefs mean nothing, that everything is a lie, that Jesus was a simple man, who got married and had a child, and on what is he basing all this madness? Well, in a painting created by a MAN, da Vinci, just because he sees a woman beside Jesus in the Last Supper, he is already saying that she is Mary Magdalene and then created a whole story from all that, but the thing is that Brown does not have any proof of what he is saying, and all those documents that he claims to exist to prove it, are just invisible.
If you still have doubts you can consult a few sites related to this issue, and there you 'll find all the truth.
The da vinci code is a great thriller, but nothing else, if you expect to learn history from it, you'll get confused, believe me.

He wrote a book about the most influential religion in the Western world and challenged close to everything about it. Though people NOW somewhat know what was fiction, fact and partial fact due to the slew of titles attempting to 'explain' the book, Brown still did include a declaration in his book that all historical facts and locations were true, thus controversy ensued.
Note to self: Well planned, deliberate controversy makes money.

Dear, this world is living in a various mass group. Every group has the same type of natural thoughts & believe among themselves, which gives them mental peace and hope. There is always one thing needed to be considered as super natural balance transformer of human emotions & relief believe provider that is God with various names. Any doughtfull information or rumours against him can cause a serious effect on the whole of this concept, it will be same like as bringing the facts which prove a life saving drug as non effective. So naturally controversy has to be caused.

Because people can't get through their head that a book in the "fiction" section is a story that's suppossed to be fun to read. It's not to be taken as fact. People read the book, and because it's very well written, they confuse that for truth. Just because the locations in the book doesn't mean that the whole thing is real... However, people love thinking about a consiracy so perhaps they just needed a book to be there as an excuse.

truthfully, i don't comprehend why Christians could throw a in effective condition approximately any novel. this is in basic terms a novel. truthfully, I delight in listening to the secular international discussing Jesus, approximately no depend if he would have been married, what he incredibly got here for, did he incredibly die on the go, what it grew to become into all approximately - opens doorways for super conversations, and a few people would desire to truthfully seek for the fact. So at a similar time as there is not any rationalization for a novel like that to difficulty us, on the different hand it could do distinctive solid, whether by hazard. like the debate over the enthusiasm of Christ. whilst some stupid people mentioned it grew to become into antisemitic, and others that it would be x rated because of the violent scenes. I heard talk exhibits on the radio truthfully discussing those questions, and, as quickly as back, why Jesus died. We Christians ought to talk approximately residing out our faith and sharing it with people who decide to hearken to, somewhat than initiate crusades each and every time somebody makes a non-christian sounding hiccup.
