Sprinkle baking soda over the carpet and allow it to sit for a day. Baking soda is cheap and a natural deodorizer. Then vacuum. Spray fresheners really don't do anything except mask the odors.
Since you are renting....Ask the management office if the carpet had been replaced or if someone had pets in there before you moved it. Most apartment complexes or buildings will clean the carpets or replace them after someone has moved out. Then ask if the carpets had been replaced. This won't cost you a dime. If they say no to carpet replacement then ask to replace it because the odors are intolerable. IF they are not willing to clean or replace the carpets you can call your local department of renting/housing at city hall to find out what actions can be taken then.

spray wouldn't work, the odor is in the carpet. Try renting a carpet cleaning machine..they are only about $20 for the day. The other option is to go buy a few boxes of baking soda and sprinkle it all over and let it sit for awhile before vacuuming.

Hi
I would recommended cleaning your carpets and using a disinfectant like Milgo SR (may need to go to a janitorial supply store for this and ask for a disinfectant for carpet) and put it in the rinse water. Deodorizers just cover up the smell for a while and disinfectant kill bacteria in the carpet.
Please DO NOT put anything on the carpet that was not made for carpet

Rent a scrubber and buy some powerful industrial strength odor remover. It is the only thing that will actually help.
