Don't! It will either get it down, or give up. if it gives up then get some tongs or something to get the rat out or your gonna get bit. otherwise get another feeder and drop it in before getting the other out.

Usually you could feed a snake a rat as big as the girth of the body of the snake but it can eat a meal that is bigger but it might take it some time to get it down its throat. I have an eight foot python and somtimes I feed it small chickens that are biigger in thickness than my snake. I suggest that you let the snake try and eat it and after a day if the rat is still there then throw a smaller rat at it and remove the larger one when it catches the smaller one. Have you ever seen the photo of the snake that ate the alligator? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4313978.stm
You know the girth of this gator must have been at least 2 or 3 times that of the snake.

If the rat is truly to big you should use tongs because snakes detect heat and it could mistake your hand for other food if the rat is dead a nice living hot hand is going to look like a very tasty treat. Good Luck!

DON'T!!!

if you try, a number of bad things can happen to you and your snake!

your snake will most likely try for a while before giving up. that will be gross, as it involves puking and partially-digested rodents...

this is where the tricky part comes... how to get the rat away before the snake tries again?

grab some tongs, leather gloves, and a bible. (just kidding, don't worry!)

DONT TRY!

If the rat you got is indeed too big for the snake to eat, she will either give up and not eat it at all, or will eat it and not be able to digest it so she will regurgitate it later. Trust me, I got a mouse that was too big for my snake at the time and he was fine. He ate it and then regurgitated it. Nasty, but my snake was fine, and yours should be too ;-)

Dont take it away chances are if she killed it she will probably end up eating, a snake can eat things almost double the size of the thickest part of their body.

Dont take it away, if your snake doesn't want to or cant manage to eat it then it won't eat it ! Just leave it be for now.

I fed my boa's on rabbits (Breading pair 6 & 7ft long) they seemed way to big for them to eat but they managed.
