The Sumerians were an Ancient Civilization. They are credited with finding some of the first real cities. Their cities were spread out between the Tigris and Euphrates Rives near modern Iraq. The Summerian civilization goes back about 6,000 years and were eventaully taken over by the Assyrians and Babylonians. They were the first people who contained all those attributes that historians say are neccessary to be considered a civilization.

The earliest known people of the Fertile Crescent were the Sumerians. About 4000 B.C. they lived in southern Mesopotamia in a number of independent city-states. Each consisted of a small city and its surrounding area. The rulers of these city-states constantly warred with one another.
