I believe that is what happens when we die, but there is nowt so queer as folk, and humans can easily go off at strange tangents. Part of the reason why I can be such a hateful b'stard at times is because I know that there is no afterlife, and the only repercussions for the rotten things I sometimes do are those that happen in the here and now, while I am alive. And even then, if I think I can get away with not doing the time I am quite inclined to do the crime, so to speak. I reckon that, for an awful lot of people, the belief that there is an afterlife and that if they play nice it is theirs is the only thing that keeps them from acting like complete animals. Take away that belief and I reckon we'll be dealing with a right bunch of psychotic killers. This is why I never bash religion - I know too many scary people who only keep it together because of their belief that if they play nice they'll get a reward. Double edged sword or what?

The burial symbolizes the fact that we are made of dust and shall return to it, Gen, 3 verse 19. It also is symbolic of the fact that we will all rise from the dead to be judged when the Lord returns. Rev 20 verse 4 thru 11.

Some cultures store the bodies above ground. Whether above or below ground, It provides a place to come and remember.

if we did not, and left them out in some other storage, the decomposing bodies would start to smell in the air sort of like a garbage dump. In the ground, the smell cannot reach the air.
Also, it has to do with religion. Cremation is not allowed in some religions.

Funny. Storing would imply that one would need to use them again at a later date. It's best to apply the "ashes to ashes and dust to dust theory", and to leave them in the ground!

Let the dead , bury the dead.
We are the only culture that, glorifies death.
If you ask me , they have Marriage and death mixed up in it's rituals.
