in this movie this guy is afraid of leaving his apartment. he puts aluminum foil on everything and at the end he falls in love and finally is able to leave his apartment

It came out in the 90's. It starred Deborah Foreman(valley girl),Bruce Campell(Evil Dead) and Ted Raimi as the guy with the tin foil. He finally leaves his apartment to save the girl and he thinks this garbage truck is a giant spider. At the end of the movie he is at his brothers wedding with the girl and they show that he still wears tin foil but now its under his clothes. I don't know the name of the movie but I hope this helps.
