I have a brick veneer home in Queensland, Australia and lately (we are going into summer) there have been a lot of bees buzzing around near my front door. I've been watching them and they are going into small holes in the mortar between the bricks. I have a garden tap very near the spot they are entering the wall. Why are they doing this and do I have a big bee hive in the wall of my house?! Is there any way I can get rid of them without hurting them or any other insects - don't really want to use pesticide because of small lizards etc! I need to get rid of them as I have a friend who visits regularly and she is allergic to bees and I really don't want her going into anaphylactic shock on my doorstep!! Hope someone can help with a genuine answer!! Thank you and have a fab weekend! :)

They've probably swarmed and have taken up residency in your inner wall. Place your ear to the inside wall adjacent to the hole in the bricks. If they're building a hive inside you'll hear them buzzing loudly. Contact your nearest orchard and ask them if they want to come and remove them for use in pollinating their trees. Most orchards here in USA either keep bees themselves or lease hives from area beekeepers. If they don't want them they can surely hook you up with someone who will. Good luck.

Hey there,
Urticaria is really the medical term for the condition commonly known as hives. The best resource online about this condition is http://urticaria.toptips.org

Persistent Idiopathic Urticaria is basically a serious variation of hives or urticaria which is categorised as having lasted longer than 6 weeks, that can be a constant urticaria episode or a series of urticaria episodes which repeat for more than 6 weeks. The term Idiopathic explains a condition which has no noticeable explanation or cause.

Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria generally suggests a severe variation of urticaria which has no apparent cause or reason. Most of what I have simply said will come as no shock to the numerous of us who have actually suffered or still experience chronic hives.

The issue we face is that lots of people, also those in the medical profession commonly consider our condition as simply a straightforward allergy, however this analogy is really wrong. Although the signs and possibly the triggers of persistent idiopathic urticaria are the same as acute hives (urticaria) or that of a simple allergic reaction, the explanations are extremely different.

It's is important to understand the distinction between reason or cause and trigger as they are not the same for individuals who suffer with chronic idiopathic urticaria.

You will find that you do have a hive in your wall. Our friend also had this problem and was told that she would have to get an exterminator as they were impossible to remove from inside the wall. My husband got some house and garden spray and sprayed into the holes. There is a possibility that you could get stung by one so wear long sleeves and trousers. It would be best at night as they are all in the nest then. You will need to put almost the full can in but it is better that having your friend stung.

Yes, these can't be honeybees. Same strange behavior observed at my So. Cal. backyard years ago. After many weeks of this activity, I poked a metal skewer to see if they were building in some inside hollow space, but found chewed up flower petals thickly compacted inside each hole.

It's a puzzle still, I suppose it was meant for egg hatching, or food supply. One solution 4 u, might be blocking access to surface by taping a temporary plastic sheet over it. They will give up after a few tries & go look elsewhere.

You could always try smoking them out of the wall. This is how beekeepers get them out of hives to remove the honey without hurting them. Then plug up the holes in your walls.
