Tyre was a Phoenician city. It had a virtual monopoly on producing purple dye from a sea snail called a murex. In the ancient world Purple dye was reserved for Royalty, with even non-royal Romans putting a purple stripe around the Togas of their senators. The Phoenicians clothed all the royalty in the Mediterranean for centuries.
