You sound like my dad, he hates that too. Phonetics isn't spelled phonetically. English is one of the most confusing languages. My dad complains that lots of words are not spelled phonetically, but he rebels by spelling cat with a K, so it's kat, and so on. Most of my English teachers don't even know what "phonetics" means, I think it's funny. English has way too many rules.

It's true. You'd think that phonetics would be spelled in phonetics.

"fonetiks" would be a better way to spell it.

How many ways can you spell the same sound? Read this list of words out loud and see how many different ways there are in English to spell the same sound.

boot
blue
flute
to
suit
new
through
you
shoe
two
flu

And "spelled" ain't having too good a day, either.

Other old saws:

Lisp is a cruel word for including it's "S"
Dyslexia already looks like a word with letters switched around.
And Ghoti spells "Fish" if you take the "gh" from laugh, the "o" from women, and the "ti" from nation.

Can we move past the little ironies of English already? There are simply too many for us to dwell on.

The 'ph' for 'f' was originally intended to indicate a word with a Greek origin. Too bad for all the other Greek words wiithout an F!

ph- 'f' sound
o- well, duh
net- duh
tics -duh

you just have to know that ph can be used for a 'f' sound. Pharmacy, phalanx, phantom, pharaoh, phase, phoenix. Terribly uncommon *rolls eyes*
