colonialism: definition - Colonialism is the extension of a nation's sovereignty over territory beyond its borders by the establishment of either settler colonies or administrative dependencies in which indigenous populations are directly ruled or displaced. Colonizers generally dominate the resources, labor, and markets of the colonial territory and may also impose socio-cultural, religious and linguistic structures on the conquered population (see also cultural imperialism). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonialism

When one country has the power to take over an other country's resources, the former can do what it pleases to earn money or just to have territory.

This lends itself to exploit people and land resources.

ex: Coke in 3rd world countries - make drinks with lax regulations, sells it for the same price, but less insurance fees, more profit.

The time frame of your question may be in the early 1700s. Environmental impacts may not have been calculated, but cotton farming may have stripped the land from its nutrients. (negative)
But it caused the economic boom and the need for more labor even though it was slavery (+/-)

Something like that...
