see,
when u read a story books, some novels or some magazines u would get an ability to grasp the things.
if u read a novel with some 1000 pages(atleast) ,u would not be reading it line by line.
u will just go on grasping the important points.
so after reading lots of books u will get ability of grasping the knowledge from any sort of written pages.
also u will know to handle the way of speechwhich will improvr ur personality because u r seeing many authors , writers and their way of expressing things.
u can also avoid lonliness.
so i always instruct every one to read 2 hrs a day atleast.

Are you after a deep and meaningful answer?
At the most frivolous, it allows you to read the reply you are reading now, at a deeper level, it allows humans to record things for posterity - and read them back generations later.
Or you might be refering to Reading where Oscar Wilde was imprisoned. If so, I am not sure, seems like a waste of some perfectly nice fields to me, but I am sure the locals like it.
