"Dys" is from Latin and has the following meanings.

1. Abnormal: dysplasia.
2. Impaired: dysesthesia.
3. Difficult: dysphonia.
4. Bad: dyspepsia.

Topia obviously means "utopia".

So the meaning is something akin to a bad utopia or a dysfunctional utopia.

The use of the German umlatte is interesting. Unless this is a German band, the use of it is exotic.

Nevertheless, wouldn't it be worth considering naming your band with a positive meaning behind it?

That's a great name, I take a class on tech visions of utopia and all these books we read are utopias that end up being dystopian, it's trying to create the perfect world and you end up with something totally unperfect and everyones always looking to be perfect but in music you want to be original...great name!

It's important to know what the word means exactly, what connotations it has, what images and ideas it encourages others to imagine.

If you're alright with all those things, then it's perfectly fine. See if it suits your music and the personalities of your bandmembers. That's something you have to decide for yourself.

Dystopia (noun) An imaginary place or state in which the condition of life is extremely bad, as from deprivation, oppression, or terror. Sounds pretty cool to me ;-)
