Put you hand on the spot. Is it hot? Is it firm or is it squishy?

If it is hot and squishy (Soft) then get him to the doctor quickly. It could be infected. And a spinal infection is nothing to play with. It could lead to paralysis.

get the advise of doctor to make sure it is not an infection.

If there is any warmth, redness, or if he has a fever or chills along with it you need to go to the ER as soon as possible. An infection in the spinal area like that could be fatal. If it is just hard- it could just be scar tissue- if you are concerned, call the doctor's office and ask.
