The conversion of medications can be very confusing. You are on 5 MG of folic acid. Doing the conversions is like this:

1 mg=100mcg

So, with this your 5 mg =500mcg

The recommended minimum that a pregnant woman should take is 400mcg or 4 mg. They do have prenatal vitamins that have 800mcg out there.

The main reason for the larger amount of folic acid in prenatals is that it helps to prevent birth defects. From what my doctor tells me the increased amount isn't going to hurt you or the baby.

400 micrograms is the amount of folic acid in the ones you buy in the chemist. However, if you have a family history of certain medical conditions for example, your doctor will prescribe a higher dose.

For women with certain conditions they will need a much higher dose, as high as 4g or 4000mg.

For the average woman a minimum dose of 400mg is recommended.

Your doctor wouldn't give the wrong dose listen to the doctor over the people on the Internet.

400 micrograms should be about right for a normal pregnant woman.
