Multiple both sides by 4 to get rid of the .25.

(8__ + 10) - 8(__ - 1) = 12

Distribute the second 8 and drop all parentheses.

8__ + 10 - 8__ + 8 = 12

combine the 10 and 8 and subtract from both sides

8 __ - 8 __ = - 6

Divide both sides by 2

4 ( __ - __ ) = - 3

___ - ___ = - .75

So it looks like any two numbers that are off by - .75 should work.
If the blanks have to be the same number, no number will work.

Is this really typed right?
