If you decide to become a citizen, you will have plenty of time to learn and make up your mind. They are political groups, the republicans tend to favor big government spending going into their own pockets. The Democrats are pretty much for the same thing but not as good at it, and they do throw the voters a bone now and then.

no its not dumb question cause it is kinda of hard to define unless you live and know the american way of life. But here is the simplist way to explain it
Republican: Less govenment in personnal life.
Democrat: More goverment in personnal life.
For example Democrats belive in helping the people with programs like welfare for the poor and giving tax cuts to middle class.
Where as Republicans don't belive "so much" in welfare they belive that you are reasponsible for your life. They try to stay out of your life as much as possible.
This is a really brief description there is allot more to the 2 partys then those principles I would go to your local highschool (when you get here) and ask if you can sit in on a government class.
Well good luck in the US, remeber that the it is hard to make your dream come true some times but that is all you need here a dream and the will to make it happen.

wow, I think I answer this question on almost a daily basis!
Two political parties with different political philosophies. Meaning, two different approaches toward a 'similar goal.'
Republicans are interested in limited government intrusion upon a person's ability to achieve liberty.
Democrats are interested in government solutions to 'help' a person to achieve liberty.
Based on what belief structure you have, depends on whether or not you align yourself with one philosophy or another. There are other political parties out there that have other concerns and focuses that you may or may not agree with. It's best to go to their respective web sites and read their platforms and see what makes sense to you, if any of them do.
I'm a Republican because the Republican party happens to believe in the majority of my personal philosophies. It truly is up to you to choose how you can make an impact on the political culture of the United States.

America is based on a two-party political system. The two parties are the Republicans (generally more politically conservative and aligned with the most fundamentalist factions of Christians) and the Democrats (generally more liberal and oriented towards cultural diversity).
If you are non-Protestant and/or non-white, you're probably not going to like the Republicans' attitudes that much.

When it comes to politics a Republican is more conservative and a Democrat is more liberal. You are not dumb at all I live here and wonder why people with different political views can not work together on a more peaceful basis.

Republicans emphasize the role of corporate and personal decision making in fostering economic prosperity. The Republican Party believes that making law is the province of the legislature and not judges. The majority of the GOP's national and state candidates oppose abortion, oppose the legalization of same sex marriage, and favor faith-based initiatives. They support welfare benefit reductions and oppose racial quotas. Since the September 11, 2001 attacks, the party supports the 2001 war in Afghanistan and the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and attempts to spread democracy in the Middle East and around the world. The Bush administration supports the position that the Geneva Conventions do not apply to unlawful combatants.
The Democratic party has favored farmers, laborers, labor unions, and religious and ethnic minorities; it has opposed unregulated business and finance, and favored progressive income taxes. In the 1930s, the party began advocating welfare spending programs targeted at the poor. Democrats favor a higher minimum wage, and more regular increases, in order to assist the working poor. Democrats have opposed tax cuts and incentives to oil companies, favoring a policy of developing domestic renewable energy. Democrats are opposed to use of torture against individuals apprehended and held prisoner by the military of the United States, and deny that categorizing military prisoners as unlawful combatants excludes them from the rights granted under the Geneva Conventions, however, all Democrats in the U.S. Senate except for Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold voted for the original USA PATRIOT Act legislation. The Democratic Party believes that individuals should have a right to privacy, and generally supports laws which place restrictions on law-enforcement and intelligence agency monitoring of U.S. citizens. Most Democrats believe that government should not regulate consensual non-commercial sexual conduct (among adults), as a matter of personal privacy. Almost all Democrats agree that discrimination against persons because of their sexual orientation is wrong. The Democratic Party believes that all women should have access to birth control, and supports public funding of contraception for poor women. The Democratic Party, in its platform in 2000 and 2004, called for abortion to be "safe, legal and rare"—namely, keeping it legal by rejecting laws that allow governmental interference in abortion decisions, and reducing the number of abortions by promoting both knowledge of reproduction and contraception, and incentives for adoption. Some Democrats explicitly oppose the legality of abortion on moral grounds. The Democratic Party generally sides with environmentalists and favors conservation of natural resources together with strong environmental laws against pollution. Many Democrats favor a national health insurance system in a variety of forms to address the rising costs of modern health insurance.

supposed to be something useful, but look too far away from each other that they can't focus on doing what they are supposed to do.
too many arguments about the same thing. They agree on the same issues, but their need for personal gains or glory prevent them from being great (together).
