Check with your local hospitals, fire or police department. If you are a church goer, you might post in the bulliten or simply ask other mom's you know if they have one they don't need.

You can also check Craiglist or Freecycle for a used one until you can buy a new one.

I'm sure you are aware, but it bears repeating; A 2 y.o. needs to still be in a 5-point harness, not a booster seat. If all else fails you can get a Cosco Touriva at Target or Walmart for around $40.00.

NO! She is too young, and she should not be wearing a big puffy coat and in a car seat! Anyway, turning the baby FF will not solve the problem! She is still in the same seat! In fact, if she is FF she is 5x's more likely to be severely injured or killed in a car crash (which happens more often in snow and ice). Booster seats are for over 4 years old, who can sit without wiggling around. Look into a convertible seat that stays in the car. We have the Evenflo Triumph 65. VERY VERY easy to adjust, especially over heavier winter clothes. We loosen the straps to get him in, and then turn the dial to tighten them down. The seat RF to a MUCH safer 40 pounds, and then FF in a harness to a MUCH safer 65 pounds. Our 7 yr old girl is FF in the harness. She is almost too tall, so she will be moving to the backless booster soon. Our boys both RF, 12 months and the other just turned 4. Switching to FF is NOT a 'milestone', it is a decrease of safety if turned forward too soon. The new AAP recommendations go in effect April 2011 to RF to AGE TWO, and 30 pounds. Babies neck cannot withstand a crash until at least that age. Too bad states aren't jumping o change the very outdated unsafe 1 yr 'recommendation'.

Check out www.carseat.org and email them to find out if they are giving out any free seats in your area. Sometimes they give them to people in need when they are doing car seat inspections at local businesses.

I absolutely would not get a used carseat -- if it has ever been involved in a crash, it is not safe to use! Someone may think they are being helpful in giving you a used carseat because it "looks" okay but it can have a hairline crack that allows it not to hold up during an accident. If you must, borrow one from a friend that you know has not been in an accident.

That is selfish of him to disregard the safety of your son but I'd not give him the satisfaction of him knowing you how much it upsets you. Just get a new seat and then bring it up during your custody hearing. It will come back to him.
Good luck!

Your local health department should be able to supply you with a car seat for free. All you do is call and make an appointment. They will have you watch a video on car seat safety, fill out some forms and you will go home with a new car seat. They will want you to bring the child with you.
