Chicago is a great town, but what I think is a big issue is where can you go just for the day (without having to fly somewhere) or the weekend thats fun, romantic and not so boring. I mean we got Galena, Lake Geneva, the City (we live there we can see always), western Michigan (ok so we ask this question in the winter)

Kalamazoo, MI
We have 2 malls mostly everything that you can think of we have and Kalamazoo is maybe 3 hrs from Chi-town if you drive. Or you may want to go to Detroit, MI but Detroit is like 5hrs or 6hrs from Chicago so I don't know if you want to drive that long in just 1 day.
