This is my first computer built, and its definately NOT running near its full performance already. I used an Athlon 3400, a Biostar NF4ST-A9 motherboard, A Patriot 512mb RAM stick, and a EVGA Nvidia Geforce FX 5500 video card. Could you possibly find the problem from those given specs? I cant stand this terrible lag. I have a suspicion that it is the video card, and maybe I need another stick of RAM to get it to perform better, but I want to know the problem before trying to switch anything. It also has an 80 GB hard drive if it helps. Also, will removing the video card cause any software changes or can I just remove it and the motherboard will automatically use the one built in on the bus?

Why would he have viruses and spyware, HE JUST BUILT IT. Basically the problem is that you just built a brand new 3 year old computer. You need more RAM, and a better video card, and frankly a little bit better processor.

First off you dont have enough RAM. You should have minimum of 1GB. I would recommend 2+ GB. Especially if you're running Winblows. I would also recommend What type of HDD are you running? 7200 or 10K RPM? Any buffering? What is your sound card? If you're using Creative Labs and their software, you're system may be a bit slow as they have alot of bloatware. Plus if you're running any AVG, it will slow your system incredibly especially with only 512 RAM.

Your video card should be fine unless you're running PCI. Even if you are if it's 256+ you're fine. If you remove the video card, make sure you enable the onboard video in your bios BEFORE you actually remove the vid card. I would need full specs from all hardware to software to give the best recommendations

Follow these steps, they will help:

1.Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and run it once daily before shutting down your computer. It removes all the trash files that are created while surfing through the net. Use its Issues section once every 2 weeks to delete all the unused registry keys. If you have a lot of Auto Start entries, then you can remove them from its Tools>Startup. But keep the important ones like firewall and the real-time protection shields of your anti-virus and anti-spyware.

2.Keep a decent anti-virus, a strong firewall and two anti-spyware in your computer. Always keep the real time protection shield(or resident shield) of the anti-virus and one of the anti-spyware active. Update them and scan your computer once every week with both the anti-spyware and once every 2 weeks with anti-virus. I have given the links to some free and good anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall; get them all:
AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/set...

AdAware SE:- http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/spy...

Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/d...

Never keep two anti-virus or firewall on a single system. If you are already using a good anti-virus or firewall, then you need not download the corresponding one.

3.Keep a virtual memory booster as an auto-start entry. It frees the clogged RAM. I use RAM Booster, which is very effective. Here is the link to download it:
http://www.download.com/rambooster/3000-...
After downloading it, follow the steps:
*.Cilck on Edit>Options and tick the follow options:
1.Set auto optimisation on
2.Show CPU usage
3.Start minimised
4.Launch automatically at start up
Also, increase the auto optimisation level and 'Mb of RAM to free at auto level' as per your requirement.

4.Keep at least 35% of your C: free. Transfer all the music, image and video files to other drives.

5.Defragment your hard drives(especially C:) once every month. To defrag, go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Defragment.

All these will most certainly speed up your computer. Good Luck!
:-)
