First, dont try so hard- that is where the awkwardness comes in. As far as children are concerned- they can smell fear 5 miles away so BE YOURSELF- think back when you were a kid and how people acted toward you and what you liked and disliked - as far as adults- Dont lead in the conversation or topics, follow the lead and express "light'' opinions on the subjects until you feel more comfortable in these situations. You sound like your are a very deep person and most people are only interested in the latest star break up and newest starbucks flavor. Eventually, you will "gel" with a group of people who have the same likes/dislikes like you--- in fact, go to your favorite places- and try talking to people there- they would be more receptive to your thoughts and ideas. Good luck-- remember less is more- so keep the subjects light until YOU feel comfortable that THEY feel comfortable around you.

Really first off, people like being around people that they think look good. This could just be your posture or a smile. Jokes and a easy going attitude help. Stick to topics that are well known in the population that you are in, so that you can make a interesting conversation. Be nice, share, smile, laugh.

I think the most important thing to to be comfortable with yourself and get the good self-esteem going. Then just make sure your letting off good vibes to ppl, listening to them when they talk is important (not that fake listening either). Showing ppl you care will draw them in easy, everyone wants somebody to talk to.

People can tell the difference when you're listening to them, not just hearing them. I think that is important when you communicate with someone, and people will recognize your ability to do this and appreciate it. Then people will automatically like you more, and there you go.

Read this book:

How To Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie

I know the title is ultra corny but you'll know WHY I recommended it when you read it.

Good luck!

I don't know the source, but I read these words of wisdom:

People will value and remember you not for what you told them but for how you made them feel.

Have you heard of this saying, to make a friend, be a friend yourself first. Something like that..
Do unto others what you want them to do unto you.

Look cool, act cool. Be yourself. (Man, that sounds cliche). Also, try to be optimistic and fun, people love that.
