The sizes of the sand grains vary thus their number in one 8 oz cup will vary also. For example, coarse sand granule is between 0.020 and 0.39 in, while very fine sand granule is between 0.0025 and 0.0049 in. I hope my answer was of help to you.

As another answer said, not all grains of sand are the same size, so you'd be looking at a range, not a single number.

Also, it would depend on how much air there is between grains, how well packed the cup is.

It would be interesting to know what order of magnitude we'd be talking about here.

I'll hazard a guess and say something in the area of tens of millions.

If you really wanted to know, you could count the grains in, say, a quarter of a teaspoon and multiply.
