He was out of fuel, about to ditch into the ocean when his cabin lights failed and he was able to see the pathway the aircraft carrier had taken in the sea from the phosphorescent trail. He followed the glowing pathway to a safe landing.

It wasn't John Glenn, it was Jim Lovell. He had a personal light plugged into his panel. He turned it on to read his knee chart and it shorted his lights on his panel and some instruments out. As his eyes adjusted to the no light conditions, he was then able to see the algae in the wake of the carrier. And, Lovell was a Naval aviator.

Umm it was John Glenn and he was a marine not a navy pilot. This story was in his autobiography.
