Clay is fired in a kiln, which is a high-temperture oven. Some kilns are heated with wood, some with gas, and some with electricity; they've pretty much been around since human beings first started making pottery.

Pit-firing is a primitive way of firing clay without a kiln – it’s firing in a controlled bonfire.
"Pit" refers to a hole in the ground, or a container that would serve as a pit.
The first form of firing clay was done in a camp fire by primitive man. A camp fire is referred to as an "open face pit."
The pit enables the fire to be contained and maintains the heat allowing higher temperatures to be reached.
The fire doesn’t have to be a huge pillar of flame, it can be as small as a fire in a washtub in your backyard. The size of the pieces you want to fire is the main determinant of the size of the pit container.
The most commonly used container is the half oil drum suspended on concrete blocks. As there will be flame and smoke it’s important to have access to an open-air space where it’s ok to light a fire.
