I started having bad cramping a few days ago but never really started my period, but when I would pee, the toliet would be filled with blood, but I was not needing to wear a pad, because there was no flow for 2 days, and then today I started flowing and I have changed my pad 4 times in the last hour due to huge, huge clots. This is not normal for me at all and I'm not on any type of birth control and have no reason to believe I could be pregnant. Is this to be expected sometimes?? I'm okay sitting or laying down, but when I get up and walk around I start passing HUGE clots. Any advise??
Thank you

I have had this exact same problem for months now. I mean: exactly what you are going through. I don't know if I underwent some kind of hormonal changes or what (I'm 34) but ever since this anomaly in my periods started I have to stay home a whole day (no matter what) when I have what I call "the clot passing day."
I usually stay near a bathroom where I can sit and wait for the clots to pass. I talked to my gyno several times about it but the only thing she gave me were Iron supplements. She said it's not too much, it's normal and that I shouldn't be too concerned about it.
Like you I could not possibly be pregnant. Actually, that is the very first thing both my regular doctor and my gynecologist ask me every time I mention my problems with the clots. It never ceases to amaze me that they ALWAYS ask the same question and I always give them the same answer and, yet, as of today I have no solution to end my problem.
I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help to ya. I just wanted to let you know I'm also going through the same thing.
I'll be checking back here to see if someone else might have an answer that will satisfy yours and my problem.
Take care!

Its sometimes normal for the to happen. Although I'm on the pill and i've noticed my periods are getting heavy because my body is change as well as my age. It is due to hormonal changes with in the body. The best way to help with clots is a hot water bag across your stomach or a heating bad. Drink raspberry tea. Its not a great but it helps make you blood flow even and drink cranberry juice to make your blood healthier. If your still getting them I would definately call and speak with the ob/gyn.
A Word About Clots
A clot looks like a tiny sample of raw liver or raw oyster and often comes out with a heavy menstrual flow. Clots are normal and do not mean you're hemorrhaging. Blood naturally clots, and often when you're sleeping during a heavy period, the blood will collect in clots and expel in the morning. The only time you need to worry about clots is if you're passing them after your period is over, passing them with a prolonged period, passing them midcycle, or passing them while you're pregnant. (Similarly, if you're bleeding at all during these times, you should see a doctor.)
Apply heat to your abdomen with a heating pad or hot water bottle, or take a warm bath. Heat improves blood flow and may decrease pelvic pain.
Lie down and elevate your legs by putting a pillow under your knees.
Lie on your side and bring your knees up to your chest. This will help relieve back pressure.
Get regular exercise. This improves blood flow, produces pain-fighting endorphins, and may decrease pain.
If you have vaginal pain with cramps, try using sanitary napkins instead of tampons.

I'd recommend you go and ask your doctor--if you are seeing a gynecologist, that might be better--and tell them about it. That definitely doesn't sound normal, especially since it has not happened before. It's normal for there to be somewhat large bits coming out but not huge clots that stop blood flow.
Definitely get it checked out. Sorry if that doesn't help much, but a doctor will be able to get you checked out to determine if this is a serious problem.

I would advise you to seek medical attention this sounds like it could be an excessive bleeding disorder. More specifically metromenorrhagia which is excessive or prolonged bleeding at irregular intervals . Passing clots larger than a lemon or soaking through more than two maxi pads an hour, for two hours or more in a row you should definately seek medical help. Good Luck!

Are you 100% sure that you were not pregnant? You really should contact your GYN and tell them what is going on. It is normal to pass some small clots during your periods, because that is the shedding of the lining of the uterus, but what you are describing does not sound normal.

You should see a doctor if this is your first time having this happen, but also some women just have heavy bleeds, I did for along time, clots are normal when your bleeding to heavy, I used to get huge ones, but you better just be safe and see a doctor, you could also get anemia if you lose to much,,,

I think it's somewhat normal. my gf and I do it in the shower while she's on her period and yes some clots do come out, not very big though, I would say not any bigger than a golf ball, maybe large jawbreaker would probably be the largest I've seen. But she says she likes doing it cause it helps break it up and pull all that stuff out of there, and shortens her period by about a day. I just have to be gentle.
