Is it normal for my computer to register as having 480 MB of RAM when I have two 256 memory chips installed? Does this mean one of the chips is bad? The computer works just fine. BTW, I have an older computer. I just noticed this the other day when I looked at the system information. I started scratching my head. I have 2 256 DDR 333 chips installed.

i guess you have an onboard graphics on the mobo. this graphics card has no dedicated ram and have to share the ram with the main memory, obviously 32 MB.
do the math:
2 * 256 MB = 512 MB - 32 MB = 480 MB
this is how it works, nothing to worry.

It's normal, the operating system reserves a portion of memory for boot up and configuration of your computer. You have 512 mb of memory and the operating system is using the 32 mb you don't see for configuration purposes.

No it just means that your computer is using the missing memory for video display, as in for graphics.
